Best Platforms for AI Agents That Handle Payments in 2026
A payment agent is safe only if a retry is the same charge. This article compares Stripe, catalogs, and Swytchcode by who creates the idempotency key and whether the second try reuses it.
Key takeaways
- -In this article we explore the best platforms for AI agents that handle payments, and the one check that qualifies them: on a retry, is the idempotency key the same charge or a new one?
- -To understand how an AI agent payment stays one charge: Stripe's API v1 saves the first POST that carries an Idempotency-Key and returns that saved result on a repeat. Keys are removed after they are at least 24 hours old. A new key is a new charge.
- -Write idempotency was not described in Arcade's, Composio's, or Nango's public docs in October 2026. A catalog connection is not a retry rule.
- -Swytchcode retries a POST or PATCH only when an idempotency key is already set. If the payment method does not store that key, look the charge up. Do not send it again.
- -In October 2026, Swytchcode Free is 100 live commands a month. Composio's free tier is 100,000 tool calls a month. Those meters are not the same unit.
You want an assistant that can take a payment, check whether a charge went through, or send a refund. The first try is the easy part. The second try is the part that charges the customer twice.
This article is a shortlist for that job. It explains, one platform at a time, who creates the idempotency key, what a timeout means, and what each vendor published about price in October 2026. It does not rank them by catalog size.
What happens when a payment call is retried
Follow the sequence. This is the failure these platforms have to survive.
- The assistant sends "charge $40 for order 1842."
- The payment company accepts the charge.
- The answer never gets back. The screen times out, or the tool result is empty.
- The assistant treats that silence as "nothing happened" and sends the charge again.
- If the second request is a new charge, the customer paid $80.
A timeout is not proof that step 2 failed. It often means you never heard the answer.
An idempotency key is a label on the request that means "this is the same payment as last time." You build it from something stable, such as the order id plus the word "charge." You do not create a fresh random value every time the assistant gets nervous. Stripe's own docs suggest a random string for keys you will not reuse. For an agent, reuse is the point. The same order event must produce the same key, or the retry is a new payment.
Stripe's public API docs, read for this article, describe the rule for API v1:
- A POST can carry an
Idempotency-Key. - After the endpoint starts running, Stripe saves the status code and the body of the first request with that key.
- A later request with the same key returns that saved result, including a saved
500. - If the parameters differ, Stripe returns an error instead of running a different charge under the old key.
- Stripe removes keys after they are at least 24 hours old. Reusing a key after it has been removed starts a new request.
- GET and DELETE do not use this header. A lookup can be repeated. A delete is already a repeat-safe action in Stripe's model.
That is Stripe's memory. Your platform still has to send the same key on the second try. If the platform mints a new key, Stripe correctly creates a new charge.
The plain version of the idea is in Idempotency Explained. The Stripe setup, written as steps, is How to Connect Stripe to Claude Code.
How to evaluate a payments platform
Use this list before you compare logos. Each row is something you can check in a sandbox with one repeated charge.
| Criterion | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Who creates the key | The order, the refund, or a random value created inside the retry. Only the first two can be rebuilt. |
| What the second POST does | Same key returns the first charge. A new key creates another charge. |
| What a timeout means | Look the payment up, or send it again. Sending again is safe only when the key is the same and the provider stored it. |
| Which methods store a key | Stripe POST does. Do not assume a payout, a bank transfer, or a second provider does, until you have read that method. |
| Who can approve a refund | A prompt is not an approval. A hold that expires into "do not send" is an approval. |
| Where the secret lives | The assistant's chat, a project env file, or a store outside the chat. |
| What you pay | Tool calls, tasks, or live commands. The headline number is not the bill. |
How the platforms compare
Prices are what each vendor published on its own site in October 2026.
| Platform | Closest job | Public starting price in October 2026 | Retry fact you can check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stripe | Takes the money and can remember a key | Stripe's own pricing, separate from the agent tool | Same Idempotency-Key returns the first v1 POST. A new key is a new object. |
| Composio | Hosted catalog, including payments | Free, 100,000 tool calls a month. Pro $29 a month, then usage. | Write idempotency was not described in the public docs in October 2026. |
| Arcade | The assistant acts as a specific person | Free, 2,000 tool calls and 2,000 auth events. Team $25 a month plus usage. | The same docs check. Authorization is not a retry rule. |
| Nango | OAuth and the TypeScript function you write | Free, 10 connections, 10 compute hours, 10 GB. Then $50 a month plus usage. | You can send the key inside the function you own. Their docs did not describe that as a built-in write rule. |
| Pipedream | Many end users, broad catalog | Free is development only. Startup $99 a month billed annually, or $150 monthly. | A workflow retry is still your key. Free has no production environment. |
| Zapier MCP | One person using their own Zapier account | Free, 100 tasks a month. A successful tool call uses 2 tasks. | Two tries can be four tasks, and the second try can still be a second charge. |
| Swytchcode | The call itself, after an allow list | Free, 100 live commands a month. Pro $29 a month for 10,000. Business $149 a month for 1,000,000. | A POST or PATCH is retried only when an idempotency key is already set. |
At one million calls a month, the October 2026 math is roughly this: Swytchcode Business is $149 flat. Composio Pro is about $29 plus about $270 of metered calls, minus a $29 usage credit. Arcade Team is about $10,025. Pipedream Startup is about $11,979. The meter changes the answer. The base fee does not.
1. Stripe
Best for: The charge, the refund, and the lookup. Stripe is the system that moves the card money. It is not the program that decides whether your assistant may call it.
Stripe stores the first v1 POST that used a given idempotency key and returns that result when the same key arrives again. Your side still has to create the key from the order, keep it, and send it again after a timeout. A key that includes the customer's email is a bad key. Stripe tells you not to put personal data in it. A key created at the moment of the request, with no tie to order 1842, is also a bad key, because the retry will not rebuild it.
Read the method you are about to call. "Stripe supports idempotency" does not mean every payout or every bank product stores a key. Card charges and a treasury transfer are different rails. Bank APIs are covered in Using Bank APIs with Treasury AI Agents.
2. Composio
Best for: An internal agent that needs Stripe and a lot of other SaaS tools behind one hosted catalog, this week.
Composio is a hosted catalog with managed OAuth. In October 2026 the free tier was 100,000 tool calls a month, 50,000 trigger events, unlimited connected accounts, and 3 seats, when you use your own OAuth app. Managed apps can be a lower allowance. Pro is $29 a month and includes a $29 usage credit that does not roll over, then about $0.0003 a call.
Under 100,000 tool calls a month, that free tier is the largest catalog allowance in this category. Use it when the job is "reach Stripe and the helpdesk." Do not treat it as proof that a retried charge is one charge. Write idempotency was not described in Composio's public docs in October 2026. That sentence means the docs did not describe it. It does not mean the feature can never exist. Test a repeated charge in Stripe's test mode and read the result.
Composio does not host your payment policy. A refund over a limit is still a rule you have to put somewhere.
3. Arcade
Best for: A user-facing agent that must charge or refund with that person's own permission, not with one shared company key.
Arcade's product is the authorization. If a permission is missing, it starts the OAuth grant. Docs updated 9 September 2026 cite 7,500+ tools across 81 MCP servers. arcade.dev/llms.txt has also said 7,000+ integrations, so quote the dated docs figure and check both before you put a number in a slide.
Free, in October 2026, is 2,000 tool calls and 2,000 auth events a month. Team is $25 a month plus $0.10 per auth event and $0.01 per tool call. At a million calls, Team is about $10,025. Idempotency on writes was not described in Arcade's public docs in October 2026. A correct OAuth grant can still send a second charge if the retry uses a new key.
4. Nango
Best for: A product where each customer connects their own Stripe account, and your team wants the charge function in the repo where a reviewer can read it.
Nango is the OAuth connection, the sync, and the TypeScript function you deploy. You own the function, so you can put the idempotency key in it. Owning the function does not mean the key is already there. If the function creates a new key on every run, a retry is a new charge, on Nango or anywhere else.
Free is 10 connections, 10 compute hours, and 10 GB. Pay-as-you-go starts at $50 a month, then $0.29 per connection, $0.72 per compute hour, and $0.50 per GB. A connection is not a retry rule. The longer list of substitutes, grouped by job, is 10 Nango Alternatives for AI Agents in 2026.
5. Pipedream
Best for: A product whose agent acts for many end users, while you are still building.
Pipedream Connect stores each external user's credentials and can call a prebuilt tool or proxy an HTTP request with that user's token. The proxy sends the HTTP you specify. It does not choose the idempotency key for you.
The free plan is development only. It does not include a production environment. Production starts on Startup: $99 a month billed annually, or $150 billed monthly. A credit is 30 seconds of compute, used by actions, MCP calls, proxy requests, and trigger events. Do not read "free" as permission to charge real cards.
6. Zapier MCP
Best for: One person letting Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor act in a Zapier account they already pay for.
Zapier MCP exposes a large app catalog through one URL. Each successful tool call uses 2 Zapier tasks. Failed calls use none. Free is 100 tasks a month, which is about 50 successful calls. Pro starts at $19.99 a month on annual billing for 750 tasks.
A nervous retry is expensive in tasks and still unsafe as a payment. Two successful charges are four tasks and two payments, unless the underlying Stripe call reused the key. Zapier MCP is a fit for a person's own apps. It is a weak fit for a checkout used by every customer of your product.
7. Swytchcode
Best for: The payment call itself, when a duplicate charge, a duplicate refund, or a payout is the failure you cannot undo.
Swytchcode is a production runtime for AI agents. The model decides which call to make. Swytchcode runs that call. It is not Stripe, and it is not a hosted catalog of apps.
On every call it does eight checks:
- Allow list. Only an action you added with
swy add methodcan run. "Connected to Stripe" does not turn on refunds. - Schema check. Inputs are checked against that action before the request is sent.
- Policy. Rules in
policies.jsoncan allow, deny, or hold a call, and they can read the arguments. A refund over a limit is this kind of rule. Holding a call for a person is on Business and Enterprise. Free and Pro can allow or deny. They do not include the hold. - Credentials. The Stripe secret is added when the call runs. It is not put in the chat.
swy auth connect stripestores it in~/.swytchcode/credentials.db, outside the project. There is no project env file for it. - Execution. The request goes from your machine straight to Stripe. There is no proxy hop.
- Retry. Swytchcode backs off when the provider rate-limits you. A POST or PATCH is retried only when an idempotency key is already set. Swytchcode does not mint a fresh key to make a retry look new.
- Response check. A success status whose body says the charge failed is not treated as success.
- Audit. The call and the policy decision are written to a local log. In October 2026, Free keeps 7 days, Pro keeps 30 days, and Business keeps 90 days.
Test or live mode is chosen once with swy init and stored in .swytchcode/tooling.json. It is not an environment variable. The assistant cannot flip a test project to live charges in the chat.
If the Stripe method you discovered does not store an idempotency key, do not turn on a retry and call it safe. Send once, then look the payment up. Swytchcode does not add memory to a provider that never stored the key.
On Business and Enterprise, a held refund can go to Slack or Telegram. If nobody approves within 48 hours, the call never runs. That is fail-closed. Silence is not a yes.
Prices, read in October 2026: Free is $0 for 100 live commands a month, 10 connected end users, allow or deny, no card. A live command is one request that actually went to a provider. The first 2 live commands can run before you have an account. Pro is $29 a month or $290 a year for 10,000 live commands. Business is $149 a month or $1,490 a year for 1,000,000 live commands, approval, and 5 seats. Enterprise is custom and can run in your own cloud account. The pricing page is the source if a number here has moved.
Which platform to pick
| If the requirement is | Start with | Leave it when |
|---|---|---|
| The card charge must be one charge | Stripe, and a caller that reuses the key | You assumed every Stripe method stores a key |
| Many SaaS tools, under 100,000 calls a month | Composio | The expensive failure is a duplicate refund |
| Each user authorizes their own account | Arcade or Nango | You still have not decided what the second POST does |
| One person, their own Zapier apps | Zapier MCP | You are about to charge customers, not yourself |
| The retry must not mint a new write | Swytchcode | You needed a hosted connect screen for every customer and nothing else |
These can sit together. A team can use a catalog so the assistant can reach the helpdesk, and use Swytchcode for the charge and the refund. The catalog answers "how does the agent get there." The runtime answers "what happens when the call is sent twice."
How we checked these facts
Stripe's idempotency behavior is from Stripe's API docs on idempotent requests. Competitor prices, free-tier limits, and the "not described in public docs" line are from each vendor's public site or docs in October 2026, as recorded for Swytchcode's comparison set. Swytchcode prices are from swytchcode.com/pricing in October 2026. Where a vendor publishes two catalog numbers, both are named. Confirm the price on the vendor's page before you buy. This category changes numbers often.
Follow these steps to try one charge in test mode
Use a Stripe test key. Do not start with a live card. swy is the short name for the Swytchcode program.
1. Follow this step to install the CLI
If you already use Node.js:
npm install -g swytchcodeOn Windows, open PowerShell and run:
irm https://cli.swytchcode.com/install.ps1 | iexOn macOS or Linux:
curl -fsSL https://cli.swytchcode.com/install.sh | shThen check the install:
swy --versionA version number means the CLI is on your machine. The rest of the walkthrough is the CLI quickstart.
2. Follow this step to sign in
swy loginYour first two calls that actually reach a service can run before you have an account. After those, you need to be signed in. Account and service logins are in the authentication docs.
3. Follow this step to start a test project
swy init --editor=claude --mode=sandboxChange claude to cursor or codex if that is your editor. --mode=sandbox is test mode. It is saved in the project. What this creates is in Set up a project.
4. Follow this step to find a Stripe action without guessing the name
swy get stripe
swy discover "create a payment" --project stripe
swy auth connect stripeUse the action name swy discover prints. Do not copy a method name from this article. Names change. Add that one action. Leave refunds off until a person is supposed to approve them. How a repeat is treated is in the idempotency guide.
FAQ
What is the best platform for AI agent payments?
The one that reuses the same idempotency key when a payment is retried, on a method that stores that key. In practice that is Stripe plus a caller that does not mint a new key. A large catalog does not answer the question. Test a repeated charge in Stripe test mode and see whether the customer was charged once.
Does a timeout mean the payment failed?
No. Stripe may have accepted it. On API v1, the same idempotency key returns the saved result. A new key creates another object. If you do not have the original key, look the payment up by the order. Do not send a second charge to "be sure."
How long does Stripe remember the key?
Stripe's v1 docs say keys are removed after they are at least 24 hours old. After removal, the same string starts a new request. Do not use a key from last week and expect the original charge to come back.
Can the assistant see the Stripe key?
Not on the Swytchcode path. The secret is added when the call runs. Do not also paste it into the chat.
Where should I start?
A lookup or a single test charge, in sandbox, with one action turned on. Leave refunds and payouts off until a person is supposed to approve them.

Try one test charge, then stop
Give this prompt to Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex:
Set up https://www.swytchcode.com/skills.md and build a Stripe test-charge agent. Use sandbox mode. Find the action with swy discover, scoped to stripe. Create one test charge with an idempotency key built from the order id I give you. If the call times out, look the charge up. Do not create a second charge. Do not refund. If a retry produced two charges, stop and tell us what you saw. Discord is the quick conversation. The contact form is better if the payment details are private. The provider name and what the second attempt did is enough.

How to Log Every API Call an AI Agent Makes
Log the call where it is sent, not where it is described. Record the operation, the actor, the idempotency key, the policy decision and the outcome. Never record the credential. If the agent writes its own log, the calls that were blocked quietly disappear.
How to Connect GitHub to an AI Agent (2026)
Most of what you want an agent to do on GitHub needs no push access at all. Working that out first is the difference between a useful teammate and a token that can rewrite your main branch.
Composio Pricing Compared with Nango, Arcade, Pipedream, and Swytchcode
Composio is free for 100,000 tool calls a month, then $29. Nango is $50 pay-as-you-go. Arcade Team is $25 plus a cent a call. Pipedream Startup is $99 billed annually. Swytchcode is $149 for a million. The headline prices are the least useful part, so here is the arithmetic.
