Best API Platforms for E-Commerce AI Agents in 2026
An assistant that can look up an order is helpful. An assistant that creates or changes the order can ship the same goods twice if a retry is treated as a new order.
Key takeaways
- -In this article we explore the best API platforms for an e-commerce AI agent, with double fulfillment as the failure that qualifies them.
- -To understand how an e-commerce AI agent ships an order twice: the first create succeeded, the answer was lost, and the retry used a new reference, so the warehouse received two orders.
- -A payment retry and a fulfillment retry are separate. Making the card charge idempotent does not make "create shipment" idempotent.
- -The stable reference should be the order, not a random value created at the moment of the call. The retry has to be able to produce the same reference.
- -Swytchcode retries a POST or PATCH only when an idempotency key is set. If the store or the payment API does not store that key, look the order up instead of creating it again.
You want an assistant that can tell a customer where an order is, draft a reply, and, when someone asks, update that order. Looking up an order is the safe half. Creating it, changing it, capturing the payment, or telling the warehouse to ship it is the half that can happen twice.
Double fulfillment is the version customers remember. The assistant asks the store to create the order. The call is slow. The assistant tries again. The warehouse prints two labels. The payment may have been captured twice as well, or only once, which is its own mess to unwind. This article is about choosing an API platform for an e-commerce AI agent with that failure in mind.
You do not need to know Swytchcode to follow it. Swytchcode is the program that can make the store or payment call after you have allowed that one action. The assistant decides what it wants. It does not hold the store's key.
What double fulfillment actually is
An order mutation is any call that creates or changes the order, the payment, or the shipment. A lookup is not a mutation. "Where is order 1842?" can be asked twice. "Create a shipment for order 1842" should not create two shipments.
The usual sequence is short:
- The assistant sends "create" or "update."
- The store accepts it.
- The answer never gets back. A timeout, a dropped connection, or a confused tool result.
- Something tries again, with a new id, because the code treated the failure as "nothing happened."
Step 4 is the second box on the dock. The first call had already happened. A failed response is not proof of zero orders.
The note that makes step 4 safe is an idempotency key: a label that says this is the same order change as last time. Build it from something stable, such as the cart id or the order id plus the word "shipment." A random value created when the request is built is a new order on every try. The friendly explanation is this article: Idempotency Explained.
The payment and the shipment are not one call
Teams fix the card charge and assume the order is safe. They are different writes.
Stripe, or another payment company, can remember an idempotency key for a charge when your side sends the same key. That stops a second capture. It does not stop your store from creating a second fulfillment if that call has no such key, or if your assistant minted a new one.
So an e-commerce agent has at least two retry questions:
- If I retry the payment, is it the same charge?
- If I retry the shipment, the refund, or the order edit, is it the same change?
A platform that answers only the first one has done the payment job and left the warehouse job open. The payment platforms, compared on that first question, are in this article: Best Platforms for AI Agents That Handle Payments. Connecting Stripe itself, as steps, is How to Connect Stripe to Claude Code.
How to read the platform options
| Platform | Good at | The fulfillment question |
|---|---|---|
| Your store or payment API | The system of record. It can ignore a repeat only if it stored your key. | Read that method's docs. Do not assume every endpoint stores a key because the charge endpoint does. |
| A catalog such as Composio or Arcade | Reaching Stripe, the store, and the helpdesk from one assistant. | Write idempotency was not described in their public docs in October 2026. Connect first if you need the catalog. Do not assume the retry is one shipment. |
| A workflow engine | Remembering that "charge, then ship" should resume after a crash. | A resume can run "ship" again. The ship call still needs the same key. See [Best Durable Execution Platforms for AI Agents](https://www.swytchcode.com/content/best-durable-execution-platforms). |
| Swytchcode | Running the one action you allowed, from your machine, with the login added outside the chat. | A POST or PATCH is retried only when an idempotency key is set. If the store does not store keys, do not retry the create. Look the order up. |
If the store's method does not store an idempotency key, the safe habit is one attempt, then a read. "Did shipment 1842 get created?" is a lookup. It does not print a second label. Teach the assistant that a timeout means "go look," not "create it again."
Bank transfers and payouts, which are a different rail from a card checkout, are in this article: Using Bank APIs with Treasury AI Agents.
What to turn on first
Start with order lookup and shipment lookup. Those answer the questions support asks all day, and a retry does not ship a second parcel.
Add "create fulfillment" or "capture payment" only when the reference is stable and you have watched a second try in a test store. Leave "refund" and "cancel all" off until a person approves them. On Swytchcode, that approval is on Business and Enterprise, in Slack or Telegram. No answer within 48 hours means it does not run. Free and Pro can allow or deny the action. They do not include the approval step. The rule file is explained in Policy-as-Code for AI Agents.
Sandbox and production are chosen once, with swy init, and saved in .swytchcode/tooling.json. A test store and a live store look similar in a settings screen. They do not look similar when two boxes leave the warehouse. The assistant cannot switch you over in the chat.
Follow these steps in a test store
Do not point the first try at live orders. swy is the short name for the Swytchcode program.
1. Follow this step to install the CLI
npm install -g swytchcodeWindows PowerShell: irm https://cli.swytchcode.com/install.ps1 | iex. macOS or Linux: curl -fsSL https://cli.swytchcode.com/install.sh | sh. Then swy --version. Continue in the CLI quickstart.
2. Follow this step to sign in
swy loginThe authentication docs cover the account and the store login, which are different secrets.
3. Follow this step to start in test mode
swy init --editor=claude --mode=sandboxChange the editor to cursor or codex if needed. See Set up a project.
4. Follow this step to find a lookup, not a create
swy get <provider>
swy discover "look up an order" --project <provider>Replace <provider> with the directory name for the tool you use, such as stripe if you are starting with the payment. Use the action name the command prints. Do not copy a method id from memory or from this article. Add that lookup. Leave "create fulfillment" off until you have seen one order come back and you know how a repeat is stored. The idempotency behavior is documented in the idempotency guide.
FAQ
What should an e-commerce AI agent be allowed to do first?
Look up orders and shipments. Add a create or a capture only after a repeated call in a test store produces one order, not two.
Does a safe Stripe retry protect fulfillment?
No. The charge and the shipment are different calls. Each one needs its own answer to "what happens if we send this twice?"
What should the idempotency key be?
Something you can rebuild for that same order event, such as the order id plus the action name. Not a random value generated when the request is sent.
The call timed out. Should the assistant create the order again?
Not until a lookup shows that the first one is absent. A timeout is the case where the first create may already have succeeded.

Look up one test order before you create anything
Follow the steps in this article, or give Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex skills.md and ask it to look up an order in test mode. Do not ask it to fulfill anything on the first day.
If a test retry created two orders, stop and tell us which system and what the second call returned. Discord is the quick conversation. The contact form is better if the order data is customer data. Ordinary words are enough.

How to Log Every API Call an AI Agent Makes
Log the call where it is sent, not where it is described. Record the operation, the actor, the idempotency key, the policy decision and the outcome. Never record the credential. If the agent writes its own log, the calls that were blocked quietly disappear.
How to Connect GitHub to an AI Agent (2026)
Most of what you want an agent to do on GitHub needs no push access at all. Working that out first is the difference between a useful teammate and a token that can rewrite your main branch.
Composio Pricing Compared with Nango, Arcade, Pipedream, and Swytchcode
Composio is free for 100,000 tool calls a month, then $29. Nango is $50 pay-as-you-go. Arcade Team is $25 plus a cent a call. Pipedream Startup is $99 billed annually. Swytchcode is $149 for a million. The headline prices are the least useful part, so here is the arithmetic.
